Self-Marketing As A Recruiter

Are You An Expert At What You Do? Time To Tell Everyone!

You might be the greatest baker/chef of all time. You understand the taste of the ingredients, the chemistry and the specific amounts of each ingredient to bake a great cake. You've been baking for 10 years and you already put in your 10,000 hours and you think you are ready to master your craft. Time to tell everybody about it? How do we do this? In my world I am self marketing as a recruiter and telling everyone I can.

Marketing is a craft in itself. Not everybody can be great marketers just like not everyone can be the greatest chef of all time. During pandemic times, candidates have to re-invent themselves and then tell everybody about it. I've tried doing digital marketing (LinkedIN, E-mail Campaigns, Digital Strategy) by myself but I believe there is only so far you can go. Working directly with the right marketing consultant can actually improve your brand. They have the expertise from knowing what works as a digital strategy and what does not.

The right marketing consultant can also measure how effective your marketing strategy is. They can guide you through a systematic marketing approach that can be monitored, ranked and scaled. Marketing is a subject in tiself. It's more than just putting up a pretty online real estate (website) and asking for visitors to come. Working with a marketing coach/consultant can do wonders for your business. Choosing the right coach/marketing consultant is the difficult part.

Self Marketing During Pandemic Times

Throughout 2020 and 2021, we have been working directly with a Digital Strategy and Marketing consultant company. We understand that the fruits of this labour might not yield immediate results but we believe that a constant, continuous, systematic approach over a period of time will benefit our company in the future. Why did we go down this route? For the past 10 years, we have relied on our experience as recruitment experts. Engaging and managing existing relationships worked well. When the pandemic hit in 2020, a lot of our existing relationships started to dry up. Permanent Hires were on the decline and we needed to pivot our business quickly to the changing economic environment. Bottom line, we needed to find new clients or new ways of doing business that did not exist pre-pandemic times. We didn't want to stay status quo.

From a very young age in business, I was always told from my previous mentor "If you stay the status quo, you are losing the game - your competitors are always innovating". We needed to do some drastic changes during the pandemic in order to stay afloat and thrive during the pandemic. The belief of staying put and waiting for herd immunity or waiting for the vaccinations to be rolled out is a losing game. With governmental stimulus, many of my clients are effectively using these governmental loans to transform and re-market their business to their existing customers. This is the time to do it.

The Best Time To Start A New Campaign

Utilizing a systematic marketing approach and measuring a lead generation campaign during a pandemic seems counter-intuitive. On the contrary, in 2021, I believe this is the best time to roll out a marketing campaign. There are always new opportunities waiting to be uncovered during a recession or pandemic times. In order to uncover these opportunities, I believe you have to re-invent your business and invest into the new digital tools that are available on the market.

I'll end this blog post with a famous quote from a Canadian Hockey player that I believe is relevant today.

"You always miss 100% of the shots you don't take" - Wayne Gretzky
